Mark Haldaman presented Zachary Mattes with the 2025 BJ Metz Young Person of the Year Award. This Award now includes a $2,000 cash prize. Unlike other student awards, this one is not based on academics but on the Rotary concept of Service Above Self. Zachary was nominated for this award by Rachel Peters who is a Teacher at Easton High School. He is the President of the KEY Club at Easton and has logged over 150 hours of volunteer service. Events in which he has participated include: Trunk or Treat, Bunny Trail, food drives, book drives, clothing drives, Miracle League, Special Olympics, Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast, and card making for senior citizens. He is the Student Council Executive Board president and a member of the National Honor Society. He accomplished all of that whilst serving in part time jobs including working for the American Lung Association, Basketball League officiating, PIAA Basketball Official, and lifeguarding at the YMCA. He is also Class Valedictorian ranked #1 out of 754 students. He will be studying Biology at Penn State and hopes to be a physician and be able to give back every day.
