Jack Bennett Easton Rotary Holiday Classic

Updated: Dec 19, 2020

Our program featured the Athletic Directors from the Easton and Phillipsburg School Districts. Easton AD Jim Pokrivsak told us the new Pennsylvania rules have shut down winter sports completely until January 4. No practices are allowed. Assuming sports are allowed to continue as scheduled, the earliest date for competition is January 15.

The fact that New Jersey and Pennsylvania do not share a common set of COVID rules may prevent any Easton-Phillipsburg competition this year. Jim and the Easton Athletic Department have made contributions to the Easton Rotary Food Bank Project. The Easton High Baseball Team recently purchased and distributed 35 Christmas trees to families in the area.

Phillipsburg AD Tom Fisher reported that the New Jersey restrictions are even more stringent. Their teams cannot resume practices until at least January 11. Wrestling is scheduled to begin on March 1 with the first meet on March 24. NJ Governor Murphy has banned interstate travel so coming to Easton is unlikely. The Spring sports season is most important because those athletes already lost a full season of competition in 2020. Losing the Jack Bennet Tournament is particularly distressing because it is an event the players really like.
