Easton Rotary Welcomes the World Through Lafayette College's International Student Programs

At a recent Easton Rotary meeting, members had the opportunity to learn about the remarkable efforts Lafayette College makes to support its international student community through a presentation by Janine Block, Associate Director of International Student Advising & Support. 

Lafayette College is home to 186 international students representing 46 countries across six continents, creating a rich and diverse campus environment. Janine shared how her office helps students navigate the transition to college life in the United States while adapting to a new culture, often thousands of miles away from home. Supported by a team of 30 student leaders, the program is dedicated to helping international students feel welcomed, connected, and successful. 

Joining Janine was Fiorella Garcia Sanchez, President of the International Student Association (ISA), who spoke passionately about Lafayette's International Orientation program, calling it "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." Having experienced the challenges of adjusting to college life herself, Fiorella credits the ISA with helping her overcome those early struggles and build meaningful connections on campus. 

Easton Rotarians were especially inspired by several programs designed to foster belonging and community, including:

• The International Friendship Program, which pairs students with Lafayette employees, alumni, and community members.

• The Conversation Pardner Program, connecting students with native English-speaking peers through summer Zoom conversations and fall group sessions.

• The International Student Association's cultural programming, which includes social events, formal gatherings, international celebrations, and educational programs that bring students together throughout the academic year. 

The presentation highlighted both the opportunities and challenges facing international education today. Janine noted that recent visa-related issues have reduced the incoming international class size from approximately 70 students to around 40 students this year. Despite these challenges, Lafayette remains committed to creating an inclusive environment where students from around the globe can thrive. 

As an organization dedicated to service, leadership, and building stronger communities, Easton Rotary appreciates opportunities to learn from institutions like Lafayette College that work every day to create understanding across cultures. The presentation served as a powerful reminder that fostering connections and welcoming people from diverse backgrounds helps strengthen not only our local community but also our global one.
