Program Recap

Last week, our club welcomed a guest from the College Hill Dental Group. The presentation focused on how modern dentistry has evolved far beyond traditional drilling and filling. Newer approaches consider the connection between oral health, overall wellbeing, and confidence.

A significant topic covered was dental anxiety, which affects approximately one in three people. Common causes include past negative experiences, embarrassment, pain, and sensitivity to certain smells or sounds. Because anxiety often keeps people from making appointments, problems can worsen over time.

The speaker explained how IV sedation dentistry can help those who are fearful of dental procedures. This method allows patients to remain relaxed throughout treatment and have little to no memory of the procedure. He also highlighted advances in technology such as improved root canal treatments and 3D‑printed smile designs making dental care more accessible and comfortable for individuals of all ages, including older adults.

Monthly Mindfulness Minute

David Weiskotten encouraged everyone to be more mindful of the people around them friends, colleagues, acquaintances, and even strangers. He shared tips for recognizing body language and facial expressions that may signal someone needs support.

He also introduced the “You Matter Marathon” and provided “You Matter” cards for members to share in the community. Additional cards are available on the You Matter Marathon website.

International Service

The club learned about the importance of access to clean water and sanitation in childhood development. Members explored Rotary’s work in the Ashanti region of Ghana, where water shortages and contaminated sources caused health challenges for students. With a US$57,000 global grant, Rotary and the Rotary Club of Kumasi helped bring clean water and sanitation facilities to eight schools in the region—making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families.
