Easton Rotary Shines a Light on Mental Health Awareness

At a recent Easton Rotary meeting, members and guests were reminded that service is not only about what we build or fund—it is also about how we care for one another.

Our program featured an inspiring presentation from Aevidum, a student‑driven organization dedicated to mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Founded in 2003 at Cocalico High School following the tragic loss of a student to suicide, Aevidum wa

s created by young people who refused to remain silent and chose instead to foster compassion, advocacy, and open conversation.

The name Aevidum means “I’ve got your back,” and that message was powerfully echoed during the presentation. Representatives shared how the program builds cultures of care in elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges across Pennsylvania and beyond. With more than 300 active clubs, Aevidum is proving that youth leadership can drive meaningful change.

Three local students shared personal and moving stories. Jessie from Freedom High School spoke about how Aevidum helped her cope with the loss of her father to suicide and gave her purpose in helping others. Vivian from Nazareth highlighted the club’s positive messaging and supportive environment, while Connor shared how Aevidum helped him overcome mental health struggles during COVID and regain confidence in both school and life.

One memorable symbol of the program is Aevidum’s banana suit mascot, which represents an important truth: mental health challenges are often hidden, and not everything is as obvious as it seems. This simple but powerful visual reinforces the importance of checking in on one another.

Beyond the presentation, the meeting reflected everything that makes Rotary special—connection, learning, and joy. We were also reminded of service opportunities ahead, including spring clean‑up efforts, charitable golf outings, and ongoing fundraising projects such as our Single Barrel Select Jack Daniel’s fundraiser.

Easton Rotary continues to celebrate more than a century of service by adapting to the needs of today’s world. Programs like Aevidum align perfectly with Rotary’s focus on peace, health, and community well‑being—especially by empowering young leaders to care for themselves and for each other.

Together, we are reminded that service above self begins with compassion—and sometimes, the most important service we can provide is simply letting someone know: I’ve got your back.
